Maguire to Moderate Port Expansion Panel "To Dredge or Not to Dredge: Implications of Expanding the Port"

11/30/2010

The expansion of the Panama Canal is expected to be complete in 2014, allowing larger ships with deeper drafts (Post Panamax vessels) to transit the canal. The workshop will discuss changes needed in the St. Johns River to allow these Post Panamax vessels to visit the Port of Jacksonville. Speakers will describe the process being followed to permit any deepening of the channel, the process to be followed to obtain financing for the dredging work, impacts to business at the Port, businesses in Northeast Florida and the community, if the dredging does or does not occur, and the effects of any dredging on the river and its tributaries.

Who should attend?

Local elected officials and candidates for Northeast Florida; Jacksonville Port Authority tenants; Private terminal operators; Chamber of Commerce representatives; City of Jacksonville representatives; Major local logistics companies; Representatives of international trade groups; Representatives of related organizations (Propeller Club, JMTX, etc.); UNF Transportation and Logistics professors

You will gain a wide perspective on the issues...

  • Learn how the transit of the Panama Canal by Post Panamax vessels will change how goods are shipped from Asia to the U.S. Midwest and East Coast
  • Discover how JaxPort compares to Charleston and Savannah
  • Discuss the economic impact to Northeast Florida if the Port can or cannot accommodate these vessels
  • Dredging of the river is a critical component to accommodate Post Panamax vessels, therefore community momentum and consensus on the value of the deepening project is needed to define the path moving forward

Presenters will include: Overview by Rich Maguire of Rogers Towers (moderator); Steve Ross, Project Manager with the U.S. Corps of Engineers; Joe Miller, Senior Director Facilities Development with Jacksonville Port Authority; Dr. Quinton White, Jacksonville University’s Marine Science Research Institute.
